Emerging from an interest in the 'conversation piece', an 18th-century genre typically showing small groups of people indulging in some form of social interaction, these works depict chance encounters, borne of observation and the memory of my own lived experience. In creating figure compositions, I always try to make the work say what I feel about the experience. These are not simply a record of an event witnessed or lived through, but are imaginative recreations that attempt to make apparent, through careful composition and application of materials, the essential quality of of that experience.
